Cercis 'Little Woody' One of the first two compact eastern redbuds ever introduced, ‘Little Woody’ is one of the most distinctive redbuds introduced to date. Distinguished by its thick, blue-green, large rounded heart-shaped leaves that develop with extremely short internodes along the stems. Strong leaf texture and prominent veination. Before these leaves emerge in spring, its brown branches become covered with clusters of small sweetpea-like flowers of rosy pink. The original plant is only 10’ tall by 8’ wide in 8+ years. Branching structure is reminiscent of a herringbone pattern. Seed set is practically non-existent. Prized as both a small specimen or shade tree, it may be multi-stemmed or single-trunked and has a compact vase-shaped canopy that doesn't need even light pruning. Grow 'Little Woody' redbud in full to partial sun situations, perhaps providing a bit more shade in the afternoons in hot summer regions. Provide it with fertile, well-drained but evenly moist soil. It is a gracefully and brightly foliaged small ornamental tree to accent the large foundation bed, naturalistic landscapes as well as small-sized formal garden or mixed borders.
