Fall 2011
Breeding for the Holidays

With Holiday Season here in North America in full swing it’s really interesting to take a look at the creative gift ideas available for the holiday season.

Looking into the future we see this as a growing trend with creative producers keen to offer unique holiday concepts.

Below are some North American holidays and optimum colors to start you thinking about breeding possibilities.

  • Christmas - Velvet Red and Pure Crisp White
  • New Year - Whites and Pale Blues
  • Valentine - Hot Pinks and Rich Velvet Red
  • National Holidays (4th of July, Memorial Day) - Red, White + Blue
  • Halloween – Rich Orange Tones

Don’t just think Red!! In the November PlantHaven ebrief we reported the USA spent nearly $7 billion dollars in 2011 on Halloween; up 9% on 2010. This is nothing but good news in these tougher times for the green goods or “Living Decorations” industry. If this is getting you all interested in new color pallets or concepts we’d love to hear your ideas.

2012 Pantone® Color of the Year

Talking of color pallets, The Pantone Institute has announced Tangerine Tango Pantone® 17-1463, as the color of 2012!! Tangerine Tango is a spirited reddish orange, giving the energy boost we probably all need to recharge and move forward into 2012.

“Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Lots of your crops fit perfectly into this promotional color theme.  Perfect for Tangerine Tango promotions are:  Abutilon Lucky Lantern® Tangerine, Dahlia Mystic Haze, Gaillardia Fanfare Blaze, Geum Totally Tangerine to name just four.

Trends for 2012

It’s been a very interesting year listening to licensees thoughts on colors. As we move into 2012 and on into 2013+ the trend lines out there for color or (colour) for our international friends seem to be bright and saturated regardless of whether you are in business in Europe or North America.

Look out for some hot punchy colors in a retail store near you in 2012 and beyond.

In addition to hot punchy colors our licensees are increasingly looking for crops with reduced production inputs. Crops with genetically improved branching and increased disease resistance are always well received.
