January 2011

Happy New Year

“Happy New Year” to one and all from the PlantHaven Team. Looking at Chinese astrology, 2011 is the year of the Rabbit. Here at PlantHaven we whole heartily agree, but we would say, it’s the year of the “Bunny”, particularly 'Burgundy Bunny'. This colorful little grass from Walla Walla Nurseries up in Oregon is receiving some high praise indeed from our licensees. Christa from Walters Gardens has kindly sent us the attached image. Christa says: “I love this plant. It very much impressed me this season, so I spent a lot of time photographing it”.

If you have nice cool autumn days this could be just the plant for you. Check it out in the year of the “Bunny”.

There is availability from Emerald Coast, GET, James Greenhouses, Pleasant View Gardens, Stonehouse, Van Essen, Walla Walla, Walters.

Color Therapy

In December the Pantone company revealed the color of the year for 2011 as Pantone 18-2120 Honeysuckle. The bold spirit of Honeysuckle will infuse you and lift you up to carry you through the year. It’s courageous, confident, dynamic reddish pink will inspire you with verve and vigor. Just what we all need to jump start 2011!!

Pantone Color of the Year - Honeysuckle

We have some fabulous plants in this confident and dynamic color. Check out the new image of Salvia Wendy’s Wish from our Local Santa Barbara Photographer Mark Nagel. You’ll get to see lot’s more of Mark’s arty new images over the coming months.

Also don’t forget the wonderful new Dianthus Scent First Sugar Plum. The first plants will be showcased here in the USA at the California Spring Trials later in March. Robert and Jeanette report this selection was selling like hot cakes in Australia on their recent visit.

MANTS (Mid Atlantic Trade Show) 2011 Highlights

Keith has just returned from MANTS, where he had a great time catching up with lots of our PlantHaven friends old and new. Keith reports the aisles were full of people and there was a real “buzz” in the air. It’s always exciting to see our plants displayed in your booths. We certainly do appreciate the effort you put into showcasing the plants. It was really cool to see Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow so well represented at the show as well as all the new Shrub Program Berberis.

During the trials you will be able to view all 8 series and the individual 34 selections which make up the groupings, grown out as side by side comparison. Good Eats

This month’s good eats are brought to you by Robert and Jeanette and it is more like good Drinks. On their recent return visit to New Zealand Cloudy Bay Vineyard was top of the list of favorite spots.

The good news is if you can’t quite make it to New Zealand check it out at your local store. Their Cloudy Bay SauvignonBlanc is simply delicious!!! Perfect with summer salads and seafood, mmm mmm.

Travel Highlights New Zealand and Australia

Jeanette and Robert headed back to New Zealand and Australia for a bus-mans holiday in early December. They reported it was great to catch up with friends and colleagues. One of the particular highlights of the visit was visiting Eden Garden Centre in Sydney Australia.

The ultimate in modern southern hemisphere lifestyle living. It was also great to see so many PlantHaven crops on display, including: Abelia ‘Kaleidoscope’, Ajuga ‘Black Scallop’, Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’ and Dianthus ‘Sugar Plum’. Take a couple of minutes to view Eden’s inspirational website.

Happy New Year to one and all until next month have a fantastic January

Kind regards
Geoff, Maureen & The PlantHaven Team
