January 2010

Welcome
Hello & welcome to PlantHaven’s first E-Brief of 2010.  Each month we aim to bring you up to the minute information on the hottest new crops from around the world and we aim to make you smile & bring some laughter into your day & most of all provide profitable business opportunities for you now & into the future.  From all at PlantHaven, “Happy New Year” & we all look forward to working closely with you in 2010.

European Chic / Trends
We are starting the year in true PlantHaven fashion jetting off to the international trend setting show of IPM in Essen Germany.  This frozen magic wonderland is where all the international movers & shakers are to be found in January of each year.

The PlantHaven booth is located in the American Pavilion Hall Two: Stand # 404.  Please call by & say hello to Geoff & Maureen who will be braving the elements to tell visitors about PlantHaven's latest developments.

The climate in Essen in January is rather cold!!!   This week’s temperatures come in at a sunny high a 40ºF (or 4ºC) with nighttime lows of a tropical 30ºF (or -1ºC) with scattered snow showers!!!  More on this next month!

Sizzling Crops for 2011
A year round sizzler really starting to make waves in the USA is Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’.  This selection made its way to our American shores all the way from Australia!!!

Bred in Melbourne Victoria – the garden state.  ‘Ascot Rainbow’ has everything.  Super year round interest, gorgeous foliage flushing orange and fire red tones in the cooler months of fall through early spring.  In the spring new gold & green variegated foliage really packs
a punch.  Highlighted in summer with gorgeous variegated bracts inside which the tiny flowers are held.

Ideal for use in mixed container plantings or for areas with low water availability.  This Mediterranean native has it all.  We are hopeful this winter will be its second coming through a Zone 5b in Michigan.  At present we list this crop as a conservative USDA Zone 7, 0ºF (or -18ºC).

Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ this super new selection from the UK with blooms in the warming yellow-orange tones held on firm upright stems.  A super performer at the University of Vermont Trials “One of the top performers of all my new perennials – Very robust habit – I’m very impressed”  said Leonard Perry.   The blooms are totally sterile giving a long blooming period.  An absolute must for your perennial line up.  USDA Zone 4, -30ºF (or -34ºC).

Visions of the Future
The PlantHaven team is hard at work on our first show / event of 2010  – The California Spring Trials (Previously Know as Pack Trials).  This event is run in the month of April, this year from 10th – 17th.   Over 50 businesses participate by opening their doors to showcase some “Visions of the Future” crops which will be available from fall 2010.

PlantHaven has participated for 4 years.  This year you are invited to come & join us on the Red Carpet to view our Red Carpet Debuts.   This year we are open for all 7 days.  Peak traffic days are mid week Mon/Tues/Wed so if you would like some more leisurely one on one time with our red carpet debutantes we recommend booking in early.  Denise Frey, our executive assistant will be only too delighted to help you schedule an appointment. Contact: denise.frey@planthaven.com  Tel: 805-569-9179. We really look forward to catching up with you all on the red carpet.

From Breeder to Market®
The PlantHaven team is very proud of our trial program.  Running each new selection through their paces here in the USA is a key part of our core values of plant introduction into the USA.   Each new product from our breeder clients enters a 2 year trialing period to confirm the plants key features, benefits, & of course USDA heat & hardiness zone ratings.

It is so important that our crops are able to stand on their own two feet or botanically their own roots!!!  There are no short cuts to success & we ensure the trialing is completed to our satisfaction before the green light is given to showcase on the red carpet.  We at PlantHaven want you to have every success with our PlantHaven managed selections.

This fall the team has been extremely busy setting up two new trial gardens, so over the coming months we will be able to keep you posted with developments on the new crops & help expand our Exclusive PlantHaven Image library which, as PlantHaven Breeders, Licensees, and Agents you have exclusive access to.

January is a great time to talk to PlantHaven’s plant project managers to ensure you are covered for trials for the coming season. Your PlantHaven plant project management team & key contacts are:
