CanWest 2010 — Masterpieces

Fall is a fantastic time to visit new places. This fall the PlantHaven team headed off to explore the wilds of Canada, arriving in Edmonton to visit a breeder client, and then taking a few days vacation to drive through the glorious Canadian Rockies, en route to the CanWest Show in Vancouver British Columbia.

The CanWest Show was a riot of color this year, with the overall theme of “Masterpieces”. Valleybrook had a super stand with giant paint canisters filled to overflowing with their super perennial offerings. Skagit Gardens also had a super display featuring a painting by “Monet” and many PlantHaven masterpieces, including Sedum Elsie’s Gold and our new Euphorbia Ruby Glow from UK breeder David Tristram.

Daphne Eternal Fragrance

One of the many highlights of our visit to Canada was seeing the rapid adoption of Daphne Eternal Fragrance by Canadian nurseries and gardeners.  Everyone we spoke to about this selection gave it “rave” reviews. Brian Minter from Minter Gardens in Abbotsford British Columbia has had the plant in constant bloom in his gardens since February!!!! And actively encourages everyone visiting the garden to enjoy the fragrance from this super new crop.

Eternal Fragrance was bred by UK Plantsman Robin White; it is evergreen, hardy to zone 6 and perfect for bringing season long fragrance to your garden or outdoor living space.  The PlantHaven Team is currently running trials with this crop as a potential premium quart or impulse giftware line. Look out for this selection at Spring Trial 2011. This is one to watch for sure in 2011.

Dahlia Mystic Illusion

The Mystic series of Dahlias from New Zealand Breeder Dr Keith Hammett were also beautifully displayed at CanWest. Check out the photo of the Mystic Illusion specimen plant Robert snapped on display at the show.

Elite material of all the Mystic series will be available as TC and URC ready for spring 2011. Thanks to our good friends at InnovaPlant in Germany for all their hard work on this.

Three new colors to check out in 2011 are Mystic Enchantment – strong red, Mystic Haze – tie-die orange and yellow tones and Mystic Wonder – amazing red velvet tones. All three are great additions to your 2011 line up.

Good Eats

Apart from seeing amazing plants, one of the many highlights of traveling is being able to sample the local fare. This trip to Canada was no different with simply the best Greek food we've all eaten in a long time. Moist succulent lamb, delicious pita bread and good local Canadian wine, mmm, mmm!

If you find yourselves in “Golden” we can highly recommend Apostoles. The Greek food was “amazing” they have been part of the local community there for over 15 years. An experience not to be missed!!!

Back to Nature

The glacier highway has to be one of the most breath taking drives in the world!! Gorgeous snow capped Mountains, crystal clear lakes, rich mossy forests, bright fall foliage in super rich yellow tones mixed with the crisp green of the coniferous trees. This is one location to go on everyone’s “bucket list”.

We spent many happy hours looking for a Canadian Moose. Spotted were; Elk, Mountain Sheep and Marmots. PlantHaven’s only moose sighting was in the gift shop at Vancouver airport!!!  Has anyone seen a moose in Canada?? We’d love to see the pictures. We were completely “Moose-less” during the whole trip.
