Independent Breeder Conference

Geoff Needham has the great honor in early November of giving the Keynote address to the Independent Breeder Conference 3, 4 and 5th of November. This year the conference is being held in the prestigious Longwood Gardens.

Longwood Gardens is a super location amid 325 acres open to the public are 20 outdoor gardens, sure to delight anyone who loves exquisite flowers, majestic trees, and opulent architecture.

The conference is a great opportunity for independent professional plant breeders and industry professions to come together to talk about challenges and opportunities and most of all network with like minded people to talk plants.

Fall Color and Natures Planting

Fall has to be one of the best seasons of the Horticultural year. Mellow fruitfulness around every corner; be that abundance of rose hips, crab apples or luscious blackberries for Blackberry and Apple pie.

Did anyone mention some real cream. Mmm. This section is turning into good food locations…..

The Dahlias are busy putting on their last fall show. The new Mystic Haze is the perfect bloom for the last rays of fall sun.
This is the time to start thinking about fall marketing opportunities. Later summer planters could be just perfect for Halloween. If you are promoting for fall planting we would love to hear all about it.

Good Eats

This month’s good eats are brought to you by Keith Manbeck our roving Shrub Program coordinator. When in Morrison Tennessee, Keith’s vote goes to Prater’s BBQ and Catering.

This is a great family run BBQ joint. It proves the fact you don’t need a fancy place to have great food. It’s at the top of my list of places to visit every time I’m in that neck of the woods. Fall off the bone ribs, juicy brisket, great slaw and fries. If you go away hungry it’s nobodies fault but your own!!

Awards - RHS Award of Garden Merit

The Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM) helps gardeners make informed choices about plants. This award indicates that the plant is recommended by the RHS.

With more than 100,000 plants available in the UK alone, how can you tell which plants are the best for all-round garden value? The RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) exists to help gardeners make that choice.

Criteria
The AGM is intended to be of practical value to the home gardener. It is awarded therefore only to a plant that meets the following criteria:

  • It must be of outstanding excellence for ordinary garden decoration or use
  • It must be of good constitution
  • It must not require highly specialist growing conditions or care
  • It must not be particularly susceptible to any pest or disease
  • It must not be subject to an unreasonable degree of reversion in its vegetative or floral characteristics

A number of PlantHaven selections have been awarded the prestigious RHS AGM award. Dianthus Scent First Candy Floss is the latest Whetman Pinks selection to be awarded an AGM.

Other PlantHaven varieties awarded AGM’s include:

Caryopteris First Choice
Caryopteris Hint of Gold
Echinacea Elton Knight
Spiraea Magic Carpet
