Hot Topics from MANTS

The PlantHaven Team started January on a high note at MANTS (Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show), held Jan 6-8th, Baltimore, Maryland.  The show was simply abuzz this year with two of our newest babies Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’and Cercis ‘Ruby Falls’.

Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’ PPAF is getting rave reviews nationwide.  With some of our colder winter hardiness test sites reporting success at Zone 5b (-15°F or -26°C).

Cercis ‘Ruby Falls’ PPAF wow – what can I say.  The American woody community is totally abuzz about this plant.  See below: Sizzling Crops for 2010.

The trend towards recycling plastics and growing interest in bio-degradable pots was also a hot topic this year as well as the growing reluctance to the mandated pots used by some retail programs.

At PlantHaven we pride ourselves on being grower friendly.  The crops in our portfolio may have a minimum pot size which a crop must be grow in.  As a licensee you are free to decide the manufacturer, color and any branding desired on your pots.  You are also free to grow in your own choice of container for sales to Landscapes.  Two crops superb for mass landscape planting are Spiraea ‘Magic Carpet’ (‘Walbuma’) PP 9,363 an industry standard for garden performance worldwide and Weigela ‘Dark Horse’ PP 14,381 a super dark foliaged Weigela bred by Peter Moore in the UK.

Sizzling Crops for 2010

Cercis ‘Ruby Falls’ PPAF this brand new US native redbud is bred by Professor Denny Werner at North Carolina State University.  This plant is so cool.  A gorgeous weeping form of Cercis canadensis with attractive purple leaves.  The key features of the new selections are:

  • Unique weeping habit.
  • Large heart shaped purple leaves.
  • Attractive dark rose purple flowers.

In spring the weeping stems are covered with rose-purple flowers borne on bare stems.  ‘Ruby Falls’ is a profusely flowering selection with low pod set.  A sizzling crop of the future for sure.  Hardy to USDA Zone 6, -10ºF (or -23ºC).

From Breeder to Market® - Breeder Profile: Denny Werner

Dr. Denny Werner is our featured breeder this month.  Denny has been busy with his breeder's paint brush to magic up some super new Cercis hybrids.

Working at North Carolina State University for 31 years, in addition to his breeding efforts, Denny teaches plant propagation, herbaceous perennials, and breeding asexually propagated crops. Denny’s breeding goals in Cercis have focused on improving leaf variegation, leaf and flower color, and plant architecture.  He is also integrating various ornamental characters derived from the eastern redbud into the Texas form of redbud.

The climate in the North Carolina piedmont, USDA Hardiness Zone 7b, is great for breeding Cercis.  Summer temperatures typically are in the 90's, and lows in the winter sometimes fall to the upper single digits to the mid-teens.  The new cultivars he has released are hardy to USDA hardiness Zone 6.

The future is looking extremely exciting for these new releases, and the PlantHaven Team is looking forward to bringing more of Denny’s super breeding achievements into the marketplace over the coming years.

Lights Camera Action – Pre-view of Spring Trials 2010

As mentioned last month the PlantHaven team are currently hard at work preparing for our California Spring Trials (Previously Know as Pack Trials). Dates: April 10th – 17th.

This month we’d like to give you a special sneak preview at one of our Debutantes:  “The Lucky Lantern series of Abutilons”, coming to us from the breeding team at the University of Sydney, Australia.

This series of super petite plants (Genetic dwarfs) have been bred for outstanding “flower power”. Lucky Lantern Yellow is one of my personal favorites. A compact genetic dwarf with large bell shaped blooms in soft lemon tones with an extremely long flowering season.  Super in hanging baskets / containers where you can look up into the blooms.  An absolute Hummingbird magnet and sure to bring gardeners in the USA many happy hours of gardening pleasure.

Look out for more sneak previews next month.

Denise Frey our executive assistant will be only too delighted to help you schedule an appointment for the Spring Trials 2010.

We really look forward to catching up with you all on the red carpet.

Until next month, have a great January,
Kind regards
Geoff, Maureen, Keith and the Whole PlantHaven Team
