Spring Trial Buzz

Our 2011 Spring Trials were a huge success with the attendance of over 400 growers, breeders, and media groups from around the world attending. Some of the varieties with the most WOW appeal were Hyrangea 'Passion’ with its striking colors, and small, compact habit and Daphne ‘Eternal Fragrance’ with strongly scented blooms appearing on new wood giving a tight compact habit. Colocasia ‘Black Coral’ glistened with its black glossy foliage and distinctive veins and Dianthus ‘Starburst’ was one of the favorites with its distinctive patterned star-shaped petals and tight habit.

Whetman Team Workshops

Visitors to our trials this year were treated to lectures and workshops by our visiting Dianthus breeding group from Whetman® Pinks, Ltd., in the United Kingdom and our Colocasia breeder, Dr. John Cho from the University of Hawaii. For the first time all of the Dianthus series were shown side by side which allowed the opportunity to compare the different flowering habits and bloom characteristics. Dr. Cho showcased his new Colocasia introduction, ‘Black Coral’ alongside several of his future introductions still in trials. We would like to thank our breeders for attending and offering their time to answer questions and share what’s new down the pipeline with future breeding projects. View slideshow

CIOPORA Meeting

PlantHaven representatives are currently attending the annual meeting of CIOPORA, the International Community of Breeders of Asexually Reproduced Ornamental and Fruit Plants in Rome, April 11 to 13.
CIOPORA is an international non-governmental organization, representing the interests of breeders of asexually reproduced ornamental and fruit varieties worldwide. Top priority of CIOPORA is the constant development of systems of protection which both, international state organizations and single states, have provided for the protection of the intellectual property concerning ornamental and fruit plants.

The three-day event will include the celebration of CIOPORA’s 50th Anniversary. The conference will kick off on April 11th with a seminar on intellectual property and will conclude with an international conference on Plant Breeders’ Rights.

Good Eats!

Our Hawaiian breeder delighted us all one evening by cooking us his special Chicken Cacciatore Recipe. A big thank you goes to John for sharing this culinary treasure. Ingredients: chopped carrots, celery, onions, chicken thighs, chicken stock, flour, olive oil, tomato sauce, fresh thyme dried sweet basil, and salt and pepper to taste. Directions: Sauté carrots, celery and onions. Chicken thighs with skin on are lightly coated with salt and pepper in the flour mix. Floured chicken is then browned in a pot with extra virgin olive oil. The sautéed vegetables are added to the pot with browned chicken along with the chicken stock then simmered to reduce by ½. Tomato sauce is added and also reduced by ½. Add lots of the dried sweet basil and simmer for two hours or more to reduce stock and chicken is falling off the bone. Add salt and pepper, fresh thyme and sweet basil near the end about 10 minutes prior to serving.

Until next month have a fantastic April.

Kind regards
Geoff, Maureen & The PlantHaven Team
