EuroAmerican Propagator's June Bloom Symposium
 |
Jeanette and Michael were lucky enough to take part in EuroAmerican Propagator’s June Bloom Symposium earlier this month. They had the opportunity to view EuroAmerican’s beautifully styled garden which displayed many PlantHaven varieties including Ajuga ‘Black Scallop’, Salvia ‘Wendy’s Wish’ and Dahlia Mystic Illusion, Mystic Dreamer and Mystic Wonder. The landscaped garden was accented with a diverse number of mixed containers showcasing many plant variety combinations. EuroAmerican also provided five educational lectures throughout the day covering topics such as social media, marketing, new variety introductions and tag research. The presentations proved to be informative and useful to all in attendance. A big thank you to Chris Berg and the EuroAmerican team for a fantastic and successful day! |

Featured Selection – Daphne Eternal Fragrance
 |
The PlantHaven trial gardens are filled with the wonderfully sweet scent of Daphne 'Eternal Fragrance'. This new breed of Daphne is more floriferous than other hybrids currently on the market and flowers profusely in early spring on the previous year’s growth with continuous spot flowering throughout the year. It also offers the advantage of being frost hardy, and both heat and dry tolerant and performs in sunny sites without scorching. It is semi-evergreen to Zone 7 and may be deciduous and hardy in Zone 6, possibly 5. It is also tolerant of both alkaline and acidic soils, unlike other Daphnes which are traditionally pH sensitive.

Chelsea Flower Show 2011
 |
Trends
The show gardens at this years Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show over in the UK really highlighted soft naturalistic plant combinations and people's personal health and well being as two of the strongest trends, 100% back in vogue for the 2011 season.
One of the absolute highlights from the 2011 show was Hillier's Garden "Feel Good about Gardening" with it's life and living theme. In the garden Hillier used color to create mood enhancing living spaces with delightful color blended planting combinations. Rose tones for relaxing in the warm summer afternoons and early evenings; yellow to lift the spirit and raise metabolism; and blue and silver for calming and serenity. They even had a tone up trail for those who are keen on exercise. The perfect blend of plants and people.
Congratulations
Huge congratulations from the PlantHaven Team to the Team at Penhow Nurseries from Wales who won their 7th Consecutive RHS Gold Medal for their outstanding display of Nemesia and Diascia. Over the years Penhow's dedication to breeding excellence has produced some exceptional selections. Here in North America one of Penhow's best known standout industry selections is Diascia Wink Pink. PlantHaven is delighted to be trialing some outstanding new selections from the Penhow program for potential first introduction in 2013 and beyond.

Gaillardia 'Fanfare Blaze' Ignites Attention
 |
Gaillardia ‘Fanfare Blaze’ is the first in the new Fanfare breeding program from the UK, and has all the standout features from the team who brought you the benchmark selection Gaillardia ‘Fanfare’ – unique pinwheel blooms, compact tight habit, and exceptionally long flowering period from Early spring– fall. It is also Zone 5 hardy. ‘Fanfare Blaze’ brings all this plus the new color palette to the garden with unique blooms in warm burnt orange tones. A real sun lover, it is drought tolerant once established. It has unsurpassed performance in containers, beds, borders. Trial sites around the world are reporting incredible powerful performance from ‘Fanfare Blaze’. One plug gives a totally filled 2-gallon, with plants making enormous amounts of buds. Here in our California trial gardens the fall planted crops are now 1 yard across and smothered with blooms. It’s easy to see why it’s called “Blanket” flower!

Good Eats!
 |
Last month we had the pleasure of sampling the tasty treats from the kitchen of our own Denise Frey in celebration of several staff birthdays. Here is the awesome recipe.
Date Nut Loaves (4 – 3 ¼ x 5 ¾ inch mini loaf pans) 350° oven
¾ cup boiling water
8 oz. Pitted dates, chopped
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 T. vegetable oil
2 t. vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 t. baking soda
½ t. salt
¼ t. baking powder
1 cup plain yogurt, nonfat, lowfat or regular
¾ cup toasted, chopped walnuts (or almonds)
Pour boiling water over dates in bowl. Let stand 15 minutes. Beat sugar, egg and oil 3 minutes in mixer on high. Blend in date mixture and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda, salt and baking powder. Add dry ingredients alternately with yogurt to beaten mixture. Blend well. Stir in nuts. Pour batter into 4 well greased mini loaf pans (3 ¼ x 5 ¾ in.). About 1 cup batter for each pan. Bake in 350° oven 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool 15 minutes then wrap in wax paper, then foil and do not cut until the next day for maximum moistness.
Makes 4 mini loaves. |
