Aptly named ‘Dark Horse’, interest in this variety continues to grow as it has proven
to be one of the hardiest dark foliaged Weigelas. Standing the test of time, ‘Dark Horse’
is a variety to put money on! This new cultivar of Weigela is characterized by a compact habit,
dark purple leaves, and magenta pink flowers that stand out boldly against the dark foliage.
This outstanding combination of traits set ‘Dark Horse’ apart from all other existing varieties of Weigela.

‘Dark Horse’ is a dense, rounded, deciduous shrub that typically grows to only 2-3’ tall and as wide. Profuse clusters of, funnel-shaped, magenta pink flowers (to 1.25” long) appear singly or in clusters along the branches of the previous year’s growth in mid- to late spring, with some repeat bloom often occurring on new growth as the summer progresses. The dark purple-bronze foliage is the product of a breeding program focused on producing the darkest possible foliage that retains good color throughout the growing season.

Easily grown in average conditions, ‘Dark Horse’ prefers medium moisture, well-drained soils, and full sun for best flowering and foliage color, but will tolerate very light shade. Prune to shape immediately after flowering.

‘Dark Horse’ is striking as a specimen or landscape plant. Its spreading habit provides good coverage in the foreground of shrub borders and it is also effective as a low hedge. Its shorter stature makes a valuable foundation plant that fits well in small gardens.
